Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) is the technology that inspired our Chief Scientist, Dr. Yogi Goswami to believe that pollutants in the air could be destroyed by oxidation. He developed the original version of PCO-based air purification technology, but was ultimately unsatisfied with its inefficiency and very slow rate of destruction. Despite its inadequacies, some companies decided to market this original technology as PCO air purifiers.
Dr. Goswami continued his research for several more years, finally developing and patenting the uniquely effective technology that is now known as Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO). PECO is the only technology that has the capability to destroy the full range of pollutants efficiently and effectively. PCO is simply a remnant of an earlier, inefficient stage in PECO’s development.
This fact is demonstrated by the following two graphs from the University of South Florida Clean Energy Research Center. They compare PCO and PECO technologies' ability to destroy bacteria and mold.
